This week, Clair, MD of Cause UK, wrote a piece for the Yorkshire Post for Northern Aldborough Festival on the remarkable Roman past Aldborough has.

The village is a beautiful backdrop to the festival, which gives audiences the chance to hear world-class musicians in an intimate, rural setting.

Aldborough was also a pivotal hub of Roman civilisation, and for over a decade, a team of archaeologists from the University of Cambridge have been unveiling its mysteries and significance.

A recent evacuation revealed a treasure trove of evidence around Aldborough as a centre for industry, a bustling metropolis of farmers, craftsmen, and place of trade. Its ironworks were key to supplying the army on Hadrian’s Wall.

It also had a rich cultural life, evidenced in the opulent mosaic houses.

If you fancy checking out the village’s fascinating Roman history, English Heritage look after the museum showcasing finds from the Aldborough Roman Site.

The festival also runs tours with archaeologist, Dr Rose Ferraby. Book a concert, explore the village, and make a day of it!
