Actor Sam Beckinsale is to join the award-winning team behind a forthcoming feature-length cancer documentary as the film’s presenter.

Stars of Cancer shines a light on international scientists based in the UK as they seek to develop ground-breaking cancer treatments.

The project is the brainchild of Bulgarian doctor and film producer Zlatina Filipova, and British film director Michael Redwood, who will be working alongside an award-winning team.

Oxana Polyakova (pictured), Chief Scientific Officer at LifT Bio Services in London, described by Redwood as one of the “super scientists” will feature significantly in the film.

Beckinsale, who worked with Redwood on his film Katherine of Sinai alongside Peter O’Toole, Joss Ackland and Steven Berkoff, which won over 20 awards including Cannes, said the director had asked her to come on board as the film’s presenter.

“When Michael called me I thought it was another cancer awareness-raising documentary programme. But then he explained why it was different and it really interested me,” she said.

“We see and hear messages all the time that one in two of us will get cancer at some point and many people fear it’s a death sentence. I’m not saying those messages don’t need to be said, but the idea that there’s something positive to say about what can be done and that cancer isn’t a death sentence, is really important.”

Beckinsale, best known for her role as firefighter Kate Stevens in ITV’s hugely popular long-running series London’s Burning, added: “There’s this whole world of research and trials going on and when I learned more about it, and the amazing people doing all this incredible work, I thought it would be great to be a part of this.

“What this film will do is bring much deserved recognition to these super scientists, who they are and what they do, and that’s got to be a good thing.”

The production team is raising money to make the film by the end of 2023 with a planned launch at the end of the year. So far they have raised over £50,000 and are appealing for additional funding. Don’t miss the chance to be a part of this important project and join the fight against cancer.
