CrimeFest, the UK’s biggest crime fiction convention, will feature a number of high-profile and upcoming authors whose books have been adapted to screen.

CrimeFest, sponsored by Specsavers, is hosted from 9 to 12 May 2024 at the Mercure Bristol Grand Hotel. Up to 150 authors will descend on Bristol appearing in over 50 panels.

Crime is the biggest selling genre, so it’s not surprising books are a rich source for production companies.

One of the convention’s 2024 Featured Guests is Lynda La Plante.

La Plante forged the path for authors to break into TV.  She set up her own TV production company, La Plante Productions, after her BAFTA-winning Prime Suspect release in 1991, starring Helen Mirren.

Adrian Muller, co-host of CrimeFest, said: “Lynda La Plante is a true icon, and trailblazer of the genre, particularly for women not just in publishing but in TV. Not only does she create and produce major TV shows, she also writes hugely successful novels.”

CrimeFest is also the only genre awards that include a category for best adapted TV show, based on a novel.

This year’s nominees include Lee Child (Amazon Prime’s Reacher), Ann Cleeve’s Shetland books (BBC), and Mick Herron’s Slow Horses (Apple TV), as well as the classic Dalgliesh by P.D. James (Ch5).

Adrian said: “No matter what medium stories are consumed, whether its film, TV, audiobook or print, our remit is to celebrate the incredible authors who are behind the adaptations, and who are enriching and shaping the cultural landscape as we know it today.”

2024 Featured Guests also include Laura Lippman, whose novel, Every Secret Thing, was adapted into a 2014 film, starring Diane Lane, and Lady in the Lake was adapted into a series for Apple TV.

The Welsh-Canadian mystery writer Cathy Ace, who is the 2024 CrimeFest Gala Dinner’s ‘Leader of Toasts’, toasting the authors nominated for the 2024 CrimeFest awards, also has her Cathy’s Cait Morgan Mysteries optioned for TV by the production company, Free@Last TV, which is behind the hit series, Agatha Raisin.

Other authors attending CrimeFest with books set for the screen include Ajay Chowdhury, whose first novel in the acclaimed series featuring Detective Kamil Rahman, The Waiter, is being adapted for television, and Holly Jackson, whose A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is an upcoming BBC series.

There will also be a special panel celebrating the enduring appeal of the TV show, Columbo, as well as one dedicated to Alfred Hitchcock and the ‘Art of Adapting Terror.’

The panel features bestselling author Denise Mina, the creative director at Free@LastTV, Barry Ryan, and author, journalist and broadcaster, Tina Baker.

Gavin Collinson

Gavin Collinson, author of the Hitchcock Murders, who is moderating the panel, said: “Hitchcock adapted books into iconic cinema, so it’s fascinating to explore that process, but also how his legacy has shaped today’s authors, particularly in creating Hitchcock’s brand of terror.”

Tickets for CrimeFest are still available to book online, with a limited number of tickets available to buy on the door during the convention: https://www.crimefest.com/
