Miriam Margolyes at the Royal Hall

A 700-strong audience attended an in-conversation event with Miriam Margolyes at Harrogate’s beautiful Royal Hall on 17th October 2021.

The Cause UK event saw ex-BBC presenter Anna Wallace interviewing the 80-year-old ‘national treasure’ around her long-awaited memoir, This Much is True.

The emotionally-packed hour saw tears as Miriam spoke of her grandfather, who left Belarus and came to Leith, followed by tears of laughter.

Anna expertly guided us through Miriam’s life, loves and values.

The chat followed with a lively audience Q&A, with one audience member asking if she’d consider standing for Prime Minister, and another wondering if she was in the running as the new Dr Who, or even, Bond. Miriam shared that she’d love to be a Bond villain, but even more, longs to be a TV detective, and deeply admires (and envies) Brenda Blethyn’s Vera.

She elicited cheers of support standing up for humanity and kindness, particularly in our deepening divided country, with the fall-out of Brexit and Covid.

The talk featured a few ‘Graham Norton’ moments, with Miriam’s trademark risqué remarks, but ultimately, it’s her chutzpah, spirit, and humanity that propelled audiences into an emotional standing ovation.

Cause UK is very lucky to be able to call dear Miriam a friend, with her year-on-year support starring in our Christmas Dickens’ Festival in Malton, so it was a huge delight to host her in Harrogate.
