Cause and Effect is delighted to be delivering a special literary event with global bestselling author Lee Child CBE, in conversation with award-winning author Dreda Say Mitchell MBE, at the RSA in London on 8 June at 1pm.

The event, aligned with The Reading Agency, will explore Lee Child’s remarkable writing career, creative process and worldwide success, while also looking at the transformative power of reading. The conversation will reflect on how books can uplift, connect and change lives, from childhood through to adulthood, and why reading remains such a vital force in society.

A central theme of the event will be literacy, access and rehabilitation. Both Lee Child and Dreda Say Mitchell have supported reading initiatives in prisons, and the discussion will consider how books can empower people, support rehabilitation and remove barriers to opportunity.

The event will also highlight the importance of The Reading Agency’s Quick Reads and wider efforts to make reading more accessible, particularly for adults who may be reluctant readers, lapsed readers or unsure where to begin. Against a backdrop of declining attention spans and concerns about a “post-literate society”, the conversation will make the case for proactive initiatives that widen access to books and inspire more people to read.

The event takes place at the RSA, 8 John Adam Street, London WC2N 6EZ, with a capacity of 150. It will include a 60-minute conversation, followed by a comfort break, book signing, media interviews and photography opportunities.

Ann Chadwick, Director of Cause and Effect said:

“Cause and Effect is proud to be delivering this important event, bringing together two brilliant writers to celebrate the life-changing power of reading. Lee Child and Dreda Say Mitchell both understand the role books can play in opening doors, building confidence and creating connection. This promises to be a compelling conversation about stories, access, literacy and why reading matters now more than ever.”

The event will close with reflections from Karen Napier, CEO of The Reading Agency, reinforcing the importance of reading for all and encouraging support for Quick Reads and literacy initiatives.
