A trip to Whitby, with its atmospheric abbey and dramatic coastline, inspired Bram Stoker to craft a story that became one of the most influential works in Gothic horror – Dracula.
Its impact extends beyond literature. It shaped the vampire myth, inspired countless TV and film adaptations.
Cause UK is working to help spotlight Whitby’s remarkable literary identity.
The Crow Calls
In 2024, The Crow Emporium, an independent vintage book seller and gift shop in Whitby, approached Cause UK to support the launch of their newly illustrated edition of Dracula – and accompanying art exhibition in Whitby and York.
For the media, it was about championing local artists, rooted in place.
We arranged a dramatic photo call at Whitby Abbey of the artists, and pitched and secured a feature profile on ITV news alongside local and regional news, including the Yorkshire Post and York Press, as well as national profile in Coast Magazine.
Whitby Lit Fest: Curating Culture with Coastal Flair
In early 2025, The Whitby Lit Fest committee invited Cause UK to help programme, and promote, its inaugural Whitby Lit Fest, which takes place 6-9 November ‘25.
We’ve worked in the events and arts sector for many years, hosting our own festivals and events, including a Dickens Festival with Miriam Margolyes, as well as multiple author talks.
We’ve also had the privilege of representing many arts organisations, including major book festivals, such as Ilkley Literature Festival, Durham Book Festival, and CrimeFest.
Drawing on that deep experience, and contacts, we’re thrilled to have secured some leading authors to headline the first festival.
To date, Lee Child, Rob Rinder, and Sir Alan Ayckbourn have been announced. In the coming weeks, we will announce the full programme, with a wide-ranging marketing and PR campaign.
The headline names support a wide-ranging festival with an ambition to nurture local talent with writing workshops, a poetry strand, and events for schools and young people.
Our aim is to support the committee to help establish the festival as a signature event on the UK cultural calendar, as well as help draw tourists to the town in the quieter, autumn season.
Cause UK has experience of destination PR and place-based storytelling, fusing local heritage with bold PR strategies.
It’s a joy to celebrate Whitby’s gothic charm, incredibly literary legacy, and champion its artistic community.
